Our First-Ever Repair Cafe!

Do you have a broken lamp that you just don’t have the heart to throw out? Or jewelry that has lost a few chain links? Could your bike or your guitar use a little tune-up? Could some of your clothes or other fabrics use a little mending? What about that broken wooden chair that you keep around, but warn people not to sit on? Anything else that you’re holding onto that needs fixing? Well, you’re in luck! Bring them to Highland Park’s first-ever Repair Cafe on April 19th at the Community Center.
We’ll have coffee, tea, snacks, and fellowship with people who are interested in extending the life of items that would otherwise end up in a landfill. It’s all part of our mission at Sustainable Highland Park.
What’s a Repair Cafe?
Repair Cafes are community-organized events where skilled volunteers are available to make small repairs to household items. The repairs extend the life of the items and keep them out of landfills. You are welcome to have some free coffee or tea while you’re waiting for your repair to be completed. Snacks will also be available. And in the spirit of sustainability and waste reduction, we are asking people to bring their own mugs rather than having throwaway cups.
What Repairs Will Be Available?
Repair specialties that will be available at our first-ever Repair Cafe include the following:
- Sewing and mending of fabrics and textiles
- Woodworking
- Jewelry repair
- Electrical repair of small appliances like lamps and toasters
- Bicycle repairs
- Guitar repairs and tune-ups
- Miscellaneous repairs of mechanically broken items
Please note: this event is first-come, first-served, with a limit of two items per person. Everyone must sign a waiver relieving the repairers and the organization of fault if the item leaves the event in worse shape than it arrives, or any other liability that may be associated with the repair.
If you would like to volunteer on the day of the Repair Cafe, please fill out this Google form. Otherwise, save your items that need repair and save the date!
